A 2 week project where we had to produce some colour roughs for a book cover for the book Noughts and Crosses.
For this project I decided to focus on the simpleness and dynamism of cut out shapes and how they can be used to create a bold book cover. The idea for the cover was inspired in a workshop where we had to use cut outs to explore ideas and themes within the book in order to create a cover. This was an easy way to brainstorm ideas and to develop them. I really enjoyed this process as it allowed me to experiment with materials and shapes. The idea behind my design is simple, its meant to represent the contrast between the noughts and the crosses and the fact that in the book two characters reach out to each other from opposite backgrounds. I liked how in my original roughs the hands looked like something dripping and growing as well as a hand which I thought could represent the characters growth and their journeys in the book so I decided to stick with representing the hands with an organic and simple shape. I enjoyed experimenting with materials and processes in this project such as mono printing and collage. I also enjoyed experimenting with typography and how it can be incorporated into my work. I enjoyed learning about how book covers can be interpreted and how they can be used to communicate themes and ideas from a story. I think that researching successful book covers influenced my design and how I presented my ideas. I think that the way that I approached the project worked quite well, I started by using thumbnails to quickly jot down ideas, I then used paper cuts and collage to develop these ideas. Once I had decided on a successful idea for the cover I used more paper cuts and collage as well as mono printing to experiment with texture and composition. If I was to develop my work I would like to experiment more with mono printing and screen printing to bring more texture into my work. I also think that screen printing could be an interesting way to develop the typography on my designs.
Some research on eye catching book jackets that I have done for my latest project Penguin Book Project in which I have to create a book cover for the story Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman.
I think that this image works well as a book cover as its quite striking and bold. I also like how the image relates to the story but it doesn’t give too much away. I like the use of colour, I think that they work well together to make the image lively but not too busy. I also like the different textures in the image, I think that the texture of the bark of the tree contrasts well with the texture on the pills.
I think that this image works well as a book cover as it is very dynamic and striking. The contrast between the bright yellow background and black hand makes the book very eye-catching and intriguing. I also like the handwritten font, I think that it works really well with the image, I think that it allows the image to communicate in a more personal way.
I think that this image works well as a cover as it is also quite dynamic. I also like the use of collage as I think that it contrasts nicely with the block colours behind it. I also like the use of negative space within the image. I think that the type font also works to well because of the sharp edges between the colours and the collage. I think that if a handwritten font was used it would just look messy and unprofessional in contrast to the other aspects of the image.
I really like this book cover and I think that it really stands out as a design. I like all the different textures in the image, the wolf’s fur, the tree trunk spine and the red tongue. I also like the contrast between the blacks and greys with the red tongue and yellow eyes, it makes these features stand out in the image. I also think that the mixture of handwritten font and typed font works really well, I also like that some of the words are bigger than others to emphasise them.
A project where we had to create a metaphorical map that described something other than a place.
For this project I decided to develop one of my previous ideas. I chose to use my idea of an ant hill replacing a brain with the ants carrying information all over the body as the basis for this project. I thought that this idea would work well as a metaphorical map as it could be seen as informative but at the same time the idea is quite playful. I started this project by drawing the head and shoulders with the ant hill and using watercolour and collage. I also tried drawing a basic human form with the ants running across it to try and communicate the idea of them carrying information to different parts of the body. However, my simplistic human form didn’t work quite well as I imagined the images to look more like traditional scientific diagrams of the body with the ants running about inside. I then decided to use diagrams from the 19th century as a base from my work which I then added the ants and in some cases colour to. This idea was party influenced by Kanitta Meechubet who uses similar imagery in her work. I thought this use of collage would also be helpful as this project was short and I wouldn’t have time to recreate similar images in such detail myself. I collected diagrams of different body parts and added the ants using pen and watercolour. I also added colour to some of the black and white images using gouache. I found one diagram that worked well for the head and another that worked well for the torso. I then combined them to form one image using Photoshop. I think that the final outcome is effective to communicate my idea as it looks like a scientific diagram but at the same time it is metaphorical because of the ants. If I had had more time I would have liked to have tried drawing the complex diagram of the different parts of the body myself. I think that the ants could also be made more clear so that they are more obvious but I quite like how they slowly reveal themselves and in turn the viewer slowly comes to understand the idea of the image.
Some research that I have undertaken for the Mappa Mundi Project in which I have to create a metaphorical map.
I have chosen to look at Greyson Perry’s work for this project as he is well known for his maps and tapestries and I find the way that he uses colour and texture interesting. I like this piece because all the elements and characters make it intriguing. I like the complexity and detail as it all works to come together to form a narrative within the piece. The colours are bold which make it stand out. I also like the inclusion of text, this helps to make it appear more map like and it enables you to understand it further. This piece has inspired me to play with textures when developing my work.
I have also looked at William Grills work. I like this piece as it could work as a functional map. I also like the simplicity of the image, I think that it makes it easy to understand and to navigate the image. I also like the sparse use of colour, I think that this makes the image look more like traditional maps. This image has inspired me to play with colour in my work and to try including lots of detail to make my work more recognisable as a map. However, this piece is more of a literal map and the map that I will be creating needs to be metaphorical.
I like this piece by Shannon Rankin as it combines anatomy, which can be considered one type of map, with typographic maps. She has described maps as “metaphors that speak to the fragile and transitory state of our lives and our surroundings.” I think this is shown clearly in her work by the damaged map in the shape of the human head. I like the use of collage, I think this helps to bring the image to life and adds a three dimensional quality to the piece. Her work has inspired me to incorporate collage into my work.
I also looked at psychogeographic maps when researching images for this project.
I find this map interesting as I like how a traditional map has been used to create an anatomical map of the head. I like how the roads and rivers appear to be a map of veins and nerves in the head. I like how its has a similar theme to the work from Shannon Rankin. I think that this piece looks more illustrative than her work and it reminds me of 18th century anatomy drawings. I like how again two different forms of maps have been combined to form a new metaphorical map.
A short summary of The Editorial Project in which we had to choose two articles and produce an illustration in response to each of them.
I have enjoyed this project as I have been able to explore a new type of visual language that I haven’t worked with before although I have found the project challenging because of the fast pace that is required for this type of work. I have enjoyed playing with materials in this project and experimenting with collage. This has given a new dimension to my illustrations which has helped to portray messages and ideas through them which is an important aspect of this project. This project has also allowed me to learn about the way in which I work and that my practice relies heavily on experimenting with materials and making them an important part of the images that I produce.
For my first article the image that I produced was a direct response to the article. I picked up on certain aspects of the feature and decided to illustrate them, making the link between the image and the article clear. I tried to include aspects of the whole article but I think that I failed to include the idea of the article being about online dating as well as disability. However, I feel that my image is quite empathetic and sensitive in communicating the themes of the article. I also think that the use of collage adds a certain charm to the image.
For the second article I chose to take a less direct approach. I decided to portray the theme of the article rather than actual events or discoveries discussed within it. I decided to convey the theme and main idea of the article, which is the fact that people enjoy frightening themselves, in a fun and light-hearted way. I chose loud and interesting textures to fashion the haunted dolls house. I think this combination of materials gives the image charm allows it to communicate in a quirky, playful way. I think this works well with the article as it adds some interest to the serious article.
A short project where we had to illustrate the mind.
One of the tasks in our one day workshop was to illustrate how we see the mind. We had to do this either using a diagram, visual metaphor or narrative metaphor. My original idea was to illustrate the connections in the mind using literal pathways. I did some sketches of this but I don’t think that they worked that well. I then decided to draw two images of a person with an ant hill instead of a brain. I chose to do this as it works as a sort of metaphor for how electrical impulses carry information to and from the brain, but in this image the electrical impulses are ants and the brain is the ant hill which is controlled by the queen.
A summary of what I have learnt during the project Children’s Book Brief.
The main part of this project has been understanding the research and development that goes into producing a children’s book. Another major part of this project was the ability to meet deadlines as this is an important feature when working professionally.
I started this project by looking at different children’s books as well as illustrated books for older audiences. This really helped me throughout my practice as it informed my work and inspired it. I found Anastasia Izlesou especially inspiring as her work influenced me to try a different technique with watercolours that i had no experience with. Experimenting with this technique was a major part of my project as I continued to do this throughout, even making changes to my final pages to try and develop the techniques further. I enjoyed this experimentation as it allowed me to improve on my work and develop my use of colour as well as my use of line. The children’s book The White Hare, illustrated by Anastasia Izlesou also influenced the colour palette of my work as I wanted to use my new knowledge from previous workshops in order to improve the way that I use colour within my work.
This project also allowed me to discover what it was like to work professionally. This allowed me to become familiar with stages of making a book such as creating a flat page plan, a dummy book and developing a few colour pages. I was also able to learn how to use InDesign to put my finished double page spreads together as well as my cover. I also learned how to add bleed lines to these spreads.
This project allowed me to develop and use the skills that I had learnt previously in the year such as how colour can have a big impact on images and the way people see them, how composition is especially important when conveying strong emotions in pieces and how words can also have a massive impact on images through what they say and how they are presented.
